This long-standing Ampeg combo went through several iterations from the late 1950s into the ’70s, and many were made with output tubes that just didn’t want to break up much. We already know, though, that 6V6s give up the goods pretty readily in plenty of other amps, and the rest of the Reverberocket of this era seemed predisposed to go along with it. “That was Everett Hull’s one effort to make an amp a little more Fendery,” Ken told me some years ago, and while it might have helped an Ampeg finally appeal to a more youthful crowd, its playing against type doomed it to an early demise. “You’ve got to keep in mind that Everett Hull hated rock and roll, he hated distortion – even when blues guys would play distortion,” Ken continued. “Amps were not to be distorted. So those R-12-Rs had blue Jensens in them, 6SN7 and 6SL7 octals [preamp tubes], which are always nice, fat-sounding tubes. Sonically it couldn't be better, it's been given a thorough service and the leaky and out-of-spec caps have been replaced. The notorious "tone-sucking network" has been replaced with a 0.05uF cap, which is pretty standard for this particular model. The tremolo & reverb are both magnificant. I also replaced the original, and marginal, CTS speaker with a really good, tone-appropriate WGS speaker. Consequently, the amp has been transformed from very weak to really quite special. It has a nice, original double footswitch. A stepdown transformer is required to operate this amp at UK voltages.
This amp came off a barge as a repair as one of the connectors has arced across on the board. We affected this repair, replaced two busted pots & chickenheads, one cap and both input jacks. It's now back up to full working order. However, it's not had the easiest of lives and it's price reflects. It is an ideal amp for someone starting out on their musical career without the huge bags of cash required to make it to the highest levels of the industry. When you try the amp you will probably notice a certain odour that it has picked up from the not-so-smokeless fuel used to heat its living quarters. Should you buy this amp it will fall to you to maintain this relic of the fossil fuel economy for future generations.
A gorgeous Pro Reverb which 2 x 12 Jensen 12NA speakers. Historically underappreciated and misunderstood, Pro Reverbs are finally getting out from under the shadow of the Twin and getting the their share of the limelight. This one is original bar a few caps and a replacement footswitch. Serviced, re-capped & re-tubed where necessary and biased, this amp is ready to run for another 63 years. This amp requires a stepdown transformer to operate at UK voltages.
If you like blues, early rock 'n' roll or you just like messing about at home, this is one of the best amps you can buy.
